Sustained Simulacrum Quip

April 4th, 2008

Interactive, crank, prank, word house cosy tree with a white picket fence… Sustained Simulacrum Quip is a collaborative installation piece that invites the audience to play with the monsters in their own backyard. Enter an environment where perhaps you are in control, perhaps not. Where you are not necessarily cognoscente of how your actions may play out and can only experiment… (watch a movie of the show here)

ade lun sec final farewell public art show

November 12th, 2007

The beginning of November saw the departure of our good friend and one of the founders of Ar+space, Michael Morehouse, aka Ade Lun Sec. As a final gesture in the true spirit of art as gift he offered up several large paintings to the public, free for the taking. On November 1st on Market Street he hung up his pieces and left them, a huge donation to the city of San Francisco.

When we came back the next day to see if any of his paintings remained, only two were left hanging. In a couple of hours, those too were snapped up.

We all wish Michael the best and we’ll miss him down here at Ar+space. But we’ll keep the space and the spirit alive, keep the torch burning, crack open a tall can of Budweiser and make a toast to our good friend Michael. Cheers!

We Asian Sex Workers

July 19th, 2007

About The Exhibit

jennifer m. hirano“We, Asian Sex Workers” is a group show featuring the visual and performance art of contemporary artists from around the world. “We, Asian Sex Workers” portrays our own personal story of being an Asian sex worker from the U.S or abroad. We hope this show will help to educate San Francisco and beyond about some of the misconceptions too often presented about our lives. The focus of the Show is to highlight and honor the strength, survival, beauty and determination necessary to be an Asian Sex Worker within and against the world of laws like the Trafficking Victim Protection Act and US Anti-Prostitution Loyalty Oath, and the criminalization of prostitution in cities all over the US. Fed up with the current laws that criminalize our work and our bodies, restrict our movement and keep us from rising up, we hope to explore the boundaries between criminal acts, resistance, and art. There will be an “oriental massage parlor” style red neon window signage displaying the words “BUY ART” towards Folsom Street during night gallery hours. The window is located in an industrial South of Market Street area in San Francisco which has steady vehicle traffic.

Featuring work by Tracy Quan, Reagan Louie, Mariko Passion, Annie Chen, Surgeon Scofflaw. The Girls of Banteay Srei (Oakland, CA) and Ivy from Young Women’s Empowerment Project

Autista Collective, Brasil

June 15th, 2007

A do-it-yourself refuge for Brazilian artists, photographers, musicians, writers, homeless soccer players and filmmakers that live across the planet. From time to time we think collectively to produce work so out of touch with the reality that makes you wander if there’s actually a bit of Autism in all of us.
